Artist Statement
Throughout my high school years, I have been called by my passion for photojournalism, and in the fall of my junior year, I was introduced to the injustices in Newark, New Jersey, specifically targeting the Ironbound community. The Covanta Energy Center continues the excessive burning of trash at the cost of the lives of lower-income people of color. These incinerators emit the worst possible chemicals for humans: Mercury, Arsenic, and Dioxin. Unfortunately, there is a huge possibility that other privileged teenagers like me, are unaware of the Ironbound injustices. That is because outside of the classroom, the media coverage of the Ironbound has not reached many people. My efforts in this project is only to advocate and share my findings of this sacrificed neighborhood.
