Artist Statement

I am on a quest to heighten solutions to my personal challenges as a female black artist. I am a visual storyteller that believes in justice and self-expression in all its forms. This narrative is about my commitment to building a loving community of sisters that is representative of the love I receive from my family at home. I struggled for weeks in learning how to become a “Spelmanite”, and when I learned that there is no one way to become or be one, I began to search for familiar and kind faces and spaces on campus to help establish myself as a voice of community here at Spelman. The subtitled text on my images provides a brief glimpse into the recurring comparison of my comfortability in my small community at home versus at Spelman.

How will I know that Spelman will love and support me like or as much as my family and personal space do? Is this an unfair expectation on an institution?

As I made these images, I, myself took strides in making my “Spelmanite” experience one worth my time and put love into each connection I made; and I can happily say that I received love in return.
